Dustin Humphrey Passport could use a vacation
Dustin Humphrey is one of the four artists displaying single fin inspired artworks at the Deus Gallery's first exhibition. Now that the event is only a few days away and the artists have finalized their pieces for display. We thought that it would be a good idea to give the public a sneak peek of what they can expect.
During a decade of being acknowledged as one of the worlds most regarded surf photographers, Dustin Humphrey has visited more countries than most foreign ministers. While having pointed his camera at most of surfing’s classic waves, Humphrey has also pioneered explorations to coastlines never before documented, including Iceland, Egypt and Tanzania. Along the way he has re-invented the surf photography genre, moving beyond tight, logo-driven action to capture not only the texture of travel and aesthetics of adventure but also the rich cultural tapestries of the countries he has visited. In 2007, during an event where he bumped dust jackets with photographic “royals”, Annie Lebowitz and Steve McCurry, Humphrey’s book of travel photography, Sipping Jetstreams won the prestigious, PDN, Book Of the Year award. In more recent years, Humphrey has been applying his panoramic vision and road-tested skills to projects in fashion and portraiture. In 2009, his work with Insight Clothing’s, Good Morning Pluto campaign won him the commercial advertising photographer of the year at the Sony World Photography awards, in Cannes. In the same year he shot Surfing Magazine’s award winning, Swim Issue. He is currently working on, Archipelago Love, a photographic homage to his adopted home, Indonesia. In 2010, Humphrey joined forces with Australian custom motorcycle company, DEUS ExMACHINA to create a small - in fact, quite large patch of motorcycling heaven, the DEUS 'Temple Of Enthusiasm', at Canggu on Bali's "Benzine Coast". The 'Temple' is a snapshot of everything that Humphrey holds sacred: custom motorcycles, classic surf, fine art, good food (and second mortgages). Originally from Huntington Beach, California, Humphrey has called Bali (Indonesia) home for the past ten years. It's here that he maintains a large studio space, a vast repertoire of exotic shooting locations, and enough surfboards and custom motorcycles to give his passport a break every now and again.
