The sixth annual Deus Nine Foot & Single kicked off this morning with a blessing of fine weather, great waves, good friends and an abundance of enthusiasm.
The Deus Fish Fry was lined up and ready to go at 7am sharp, with coffee brewing, waves pumping and a diverse quiver splayed across the grass at The Lawn Canggu.
The Fish Fry, now in its fifth year, is a come one come all, ride anything funfest. It’s all about sharing ideas, sharing boards, sharing waves and sharing the stoke – the perfect way to kick of this four-day celebration of music, art and surfing.
The Fish Fry brings together surfers, shapers, locals and visitors to discuss board shapes of myriad form, give them a ride and try out something new, and there was no shortage of boards on display. From finless shortboards, through fishes, singlefins, quads and bonzers, right up to ten-foot-plus longboards.
Doyens of the global surfing community – including Thomas Bexon, Jye Byrnes, Josh Constable and the legend, Bob McTavish – were present, sharing discussion with notable surfers and the general public alike, divulging the nuances of surfboard design.
And the entertainment was no less dynamic in the water. Clean lines filled the horizon at Batu Bolong and freesurfers of all abilities were taking full advantage of conditions.
Competitors - including Harrison Roach, Deni Blackboys, Husni Ridhwan, Lewie Dunn and many more – were getting their last-minute practice in and displaying the sublime talents that have earned them an invite to this, the 2016 Deus Nine Foot & Single.
With the Deus Shapers’ Forum taking place back at the Temple of Enthusiasm later tonight, this has been an exceptional taster of what’s to come – four days of surf-inspired enthusiasm in all its glory.
